Psychometric assessments from Hogan
Understanding motivators, behavioural traits and potential derailers
Hogan Assessments are considered the world-renowned authority in personality profiling. Their research-based assessments offer reliable and robust insight into personality which can be utilised to inform recruitment decisions and the development of existing employees.
We have used the Hogan suite extensively within our research and consulting work with leaders because of the unique insights these tools to support candidate selection, leadership development and team development.
About the Hogan assessment suite
One of the main aims of the Hogan assessments is to evaluate leadership. These tests holistically assess an individual’s personality, identify strengths and weaknesses, underlying values and motivators, including career ‘derailers’ and the proclaimed ‘dark side’ of personality. The comprehensive approach that Hogan Assessments offer can be valuable to organisations looking to better understand both existing and potential employees.
Hogan’s assessments help predict how individuals are likely to behave in a professional setting, and why they will do it, enabling:
- Organisations to extract key insights when engaging in employee recruitment and development as well as optimising the fit between new candidates, their roles and the organisational culture.
- Individuals to develop greater insight into their own behaviour traits, motivators and potential derailers.
The Hogan assessments we offer include:
Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI)
This measures an individual’s ’normal’ or ‘bright side’ personality, providing a macro view of how they may work with others or behave in different situations. This helps describe the role an individual is likely to play in a team or predict what type of leader the participant is likely to be.
The HPI works well alongside the HDS to provide a measure of the participant’s more typical everyday behaviour and when they are at their best.

Hogan Development Survey (HDS)
This measures an individual’s potential derailers or ‘dark side’ personality. It assesses how individuals are likely to behave in times of difficulty, or when under pressure. This is often overlooked, but as every business will go through periods of challenge, this is an incredibly powerful assessment to understand an individuals’ true potential and what can hold them back. By assessing dark-side personality, you can recognise and mitigate performance risks before they become a problem.

Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI)
This identifies an individual’s underlying motives, values and preferences that drive their goals, expectations and behaviours. This helps explain the ‘why’ behind a candidate’s behaviour, providing opportunities to align individuals with the roles and environments where they are most likely to thrive. The framework is based on over 80 years of research into what motivates people.
